Fatal accident: Drunk driver who killed 2 Montana women sentenced

Most people probably have difficulty understanding why some people still drink and drive, considering the high volume of messages and statistics highlighting the potential consequences. Unfortunately, such behavior continues, and too often, a drunk driver causes a fatal accident that ends the life of an innocent person who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. As a horrific example, recently, a man received a 40-year sentence for killing two Montana women last year while he was driving drunk one evening.

Reportedly, the tragedy happened in July 2019 near midnight. The 24-year-old man, who lived in a different state, was driving his truck on Montana 35 near Kalispell when he drove into the opposite lane. He crashed head-on into another vehicle. A 59-year-old Montana woman and her 31-year-old daughter were traveling in the other vehicle, and unfortunately, they were killed in the collision. Apparently, following the crash, the driver was taken to a local hospital where he had blood drawn, indicating a blood alcohol level of over .180; Montana's legal limit is 0.08.

According to accident witnesses, before the crash, the man's vehicle had been crossing over into other traffic lanes, forcing other vehicles to swerve to avoid it. The deceased woman's husband explained the course of events on the night of the fatal accident. It seems that he, his wife, and their son and daughter had attended a friend's birthday party that evening, but they had traveled in two cars. At the end of the evening, his wife made the fateful decision to drive home with her daughter.

Sadly, this man and likely many other members of the victims' families are left grieving the loss of their loved ones and probably feeling anger and frustration about the circumstances leading up to these deaths. Most Montana residents would agree that a fatal accident like this one, in which a man chose to drive drunk, could have been prevented quite easily. Although the driver now faces many years in prison for his crime, he could also be held accountable within the civil justice system. An experienced personal injury attorney can help those people in similar situations understand their options.
