Car crash injuries may necessitate plastic surgery

Fortunately, the introduction of airbags helped reduce some types of severe and fatal injuries in car crashes -- like certain head and neck injuries, for example. However, the impact of a deployed airbag can cause facial injuries, including a broken nose and other broken bones in the face.

Car crashes often result in facial injuries. Sometimes, they only amount to bruising. However, broken glass from windshields or windows can cause serious lacerations. So can objects in the car that may go flying with the impact of the crash.

Some facial injuries heal on their own with time. Others require plastic surgery. Sometimes broken bones and deep cuts (particularly those requiring stitches) necessitate it. Many times, broken noses don't heal properly without surgery.

People often use the terms "plastic surgery" and "cosmetic surgery" interchangeably. They're both widely considered "elective" and done for the sake of vanity. However, plastic surgery is defined as a procedure that's intended to correct some kind of defect that a person is born with or one that's caused by trauma or disease. That trauma can be a burn, an animal bite, a violent attack, a car crash or other type of accident.

If you suffer facial injuries (or any other type of injuries) in a crash caused by another driver that require plastic surgery, you have every right to seek compensation to cover the costs of that surgery.

Don't let the insurance company or the at-fault driver try to say that you're simply using the crash as an excuse to "have some work done." Your attorney can make sure that you get the documentation needed from your doctors that explains how your injuries in the crash make the surgery necessary.
