The MHP reports the latest statistics for fatal crashes

The Montana Highway Patrol put out statistics regularly, many of which can help drivers make better decisions and remain informed about how others are driving around them. This year, the MHP released information showing that both July and August are the deadliest months to be a driver in the state.

In 2019, 49 people died in July and August as a result of traffic collisions. The MHP patrol sergeant reported that there have been 85 traffic collision fatalities so far in 2020, which is expected to increase significantly when the data from the July 4 weekend comes in. Additionally, around 60% of all fatal crashes in the state do involve alcohol or drug impairment.

What do the MHP want people to do if they see drunk drivers?

If you do see a drunk driver on the roads, or if you see someone who may be impaired, the MHP would like people to call 911 right away. The driver could be tired, distracted, impaired or dealing with a medical condition, so calling 911 will make sure that an officer can check in with them and pull them over.

They also stated that many bars in Montana participate in the "Home Free" program, which helps people get home safely if they've had too much to drink. If a bar doesn't have that option, there are other possibilities, such as using a ride-sharing service, to get home.

People should do what they can to keep others safe, but that doesn't always happen. If you do end up involved in a crash with a drunk driver, you should seek medical care and prepare to make a claim.
