Is it possible to heal from a spinal cord injury?

When you found out that you'd suffered a spinal cord injury in the collision, you weren't surprised. You knew that you were having weakness and that your lower body didn't hurt as much as you thought it should.

At the hospital, you were told that you had an incomplete spinal injury, so you should still retain some feeling. The doctors made it clear that the goal was to help you regain as much function as possible. That left you with questions since it was always your belief that a spinal cord injury would be permanent.

Is it really possible to recover from a spinal cord injury?

In many cases, at least some recovery is possible. Initially, the goal of the medical team is to reduce inflammation and pressure so that the injuries you've suffered don't worsen. Then, they will look for secondary injuries and conditions, like blood clots and pressure sores, infections or trouble with blood pressure since these could impact your ability to heal or make your condition worse.

As soon as you are stable, the medical team may place you into rehabilitation. This could include occupational and physical therapy, mental health counseling or other treatments. The goal is to keep your body moving and to encourage healing, both mentally and physically. It's normal to need regular checkups throughout the first year after the injury.

It may be possible to regain function up to 18 months after an injury. Sometimes, functions come back even after that. That's why it's important to file a claim for compensation that will allow you to focus intently on the initial 18 months of recovery and to make strides in your healing while you can.
