Occupational therapy may need to be included in your settlement

When you woke up in the hospital, you felt groggy and a little disconnected. You had someone come to explain to you that you'd been involved in a traffic accident. The next several days were a blur as you went through various tests and slowly started to recover.

When you suffer a traumatic brain injury, it could have lasting effects. That's why many patients need to go through ongoing occupational therapy once their injury is stable enough for them to return home. In some cases, you may even start occupational therapy while you're still in the hospital.

Occupational therapy is a key form of rehabilitation for those who have brain injuries. The goal is to help them reintegrate back into society, even if that means teaching them new ways of doing things or helping them to learn the basics, like speaking or walking.

Occupational therapy is unique in that it encompasses all parts of an individual's life. It addresses:

  • Re-learning social skills
  • Building effective routines and schedules
  • Teaching the use of memory compensation techniques
  • The need for training and adaptation for normal daily activities, such as bathing, grooming or dressing
  • Identifying new or more readily available hobbies or activities
  • The need for retraining exercises to help with attention, memory and executive functioning

Occupational therapy can take place in private practices, via in-home therapy sessions, through health agencies or even in freestanding community programs. If this is something that you need after a brain injury, your attorney will include medical information and the need for occupational therapy when negotiating your personal injury settlement.
