You can seek support as you recover from a brain injury

After a brain injury, something that many patients deal with is brain damage. When the brain goes without oxygen or is impacted acutely, cells die. Those cells can't regenerate, so any information that they held could be lost.

Did you know that around 2.6 million people suffer a brain injury of some kind each year? Brain injuries can be a result of anything from an illness to trauma. While traumatic brain injuries can be fatal (The Brain Injury Association reports that around 52,000 people die annually as a result), it's far more likely to continue living with some kind of injury and symptoms to accompany it.

When you're in a crash and suffer a brain injury, it's called a traumatic brain injury, or TBI. A TBI happens when your brain is penetrated, moves inside the skull or spins unexpectedly inside the skull. As the brain swells, it can run out of room, leading to secondary symptoms and injuries.

The good news about a traumatic brain injury is that it's not degenerative once it is stabilized. The injuries you suffer initially should get better, at least in some ways. For instance, if you lose the ability to speak, it's likely that you will be able to regain some speech by going through speech therapy and other treatment programs.

The brain is very good at relearning how to do things, but that takes time. As a victim with this kind of injury, that means that you may not be able to work or do the things you love. It's important to hold the person who hit you responsible, so you can focus on your recovery and have the financial backing you need.
