What are some possible complications of a spinal cord injury?

Spinal injuries can be very serious. Even when they don't result in paralysis, there is a potential for complications and lifelong pain.

Not everyone who suffers from a spinal injury is going to have complications, but many do. It's important to note that some complications can be common, though. Take for instance syringomyelia. This is a condition that happens in around 3% of patients with spinal injuries. This is when a cyst grows within the spinal cord, eventually leading to spinal cord compression and myelopathy.

Another common complication is spasticity. This causes long-term muscle contractions that make the muscles rigid or stiff. People who have had their spinal cord injury for a year or longer are affected by spasticity at a rate of around 65 to 78%.

There can also be complications around the body. In the cardiovascular system, the individual may have low blood pressure that causes dizziness, fainting or weakness when going from lying down to standing or sitting to standing.

Other possible complications of a traumatic spinal cord injury include:

  • Secondary Immunodeficiency
  • Bowel dysfunction
  • Bladder problems
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Pressure sores

As you can see, someone with a spinal injury could have many complications to contend with on top of living with the injury itself. That's one of the reasons that it is so important for people who have been injured to pursue fair compensation after the accident. A spinal injury can usually be stabilized, but even then, complications could arise years later. It's important to have the financial support that you need to be able to seek the right medical care at any time.
