Getting immediate care helps reduce the impact of a brain injury

Traumatic brain injuries can lead to serious complications. Many people struggle with temporary and permanent disabilities. Some pass away as a result of their injuries.

You may be surprised to know that head injuries are among the most common causes of death in the United States. Those injuries could be closed or open, caused by an object penetrating the skull or the skull hitting a hard object. Injuries can happen in any number of ways, and rapid treatment is the only way to help prevent the person's condition from worsening.

Any person who has suffered a brain injury needs to receive medical attention right away. Every head injury should be treated like it could be a brain injury, even though an injury to the head does not always cause one. At the hospital, it's likely that you, or the person who was injured, will go through imaging tests. These tests, like computerized tomography scans, will look for bleeding and swelling within the brain.

If there is bleeding and swelling, some patients could require emergency surgery. This is done to remove blood clots, reduce pressure and help restore proper circulation to the brain.

It is important to remember that someone can appear perfectly fine following a crash but then start to develop symptoms of a brain injury. That's because swelling and pressure build up over time. Symptoms might start to develop as the person's brain cells begin to die off and circulation is reduced.

Patients with brain injuries will need significant medical treatment and care over time. If you or someone you love suffer one as a result of a crash, you should remember that you can pursue a claim against the at-fault driver.
