Parents should watch out for extremely strong magnets

Magnets that are made from rare materials can cause significant injury to children if they are swallowed. These magnets are up to 30 times stronger than the type that Montana residents and others use in their homes or in schools. Mostly sold to children as a toy, the products were banned in 2014, but the ban was rescinded by a group of federal judges in 2016. In 2019, it was estimated that 1,666 of these magnets were ingested by children, which was an increase from 281 reported incidents in 2016.

If ingested, the magnets can push through the intestinal tract and cause serious injury. According to the Toy Association, the products are not intended to be used by children and are instead meant to be used by adults. However, parents are urged to make sure that these strong magnets are not in their homes and that their children don't interact with them.

If a person gets hurt or sick while using a product, the manufacturer of that item may be liable for any damages that he or she incurs. This is typically true if it can be shown that the damages were the result of a manufacturer's negligence. Other parties may be liable in a product liability case if there is evidence that they were negligent in making, marketing or selling a defective good.

An attorney may be able to help a person obtain a favorable settlement or jury award. If a child is hurt, a parent may be able to obtain compensation for a son or daughter's lost future earnings. It may also be possible for a parent to obtain the money necessary to pay to renovate a home or car to make it easier for an injured child to use.
