Bozeman, Montana, sees unusually high numbers of crashes

Bozeman, Montana, has seen an alarming number of car crashes over the winter months of 2019-2020. In February 2020 alone, the crash investigator employed by Bozeman police has responded to more than 80 accidents. The winter as a whole has seen over 600 accidents. The winter of 2018-2019 was even worse with some 900 accidents arising.

Police are concerned that 2020 as a whole will see as many crashes as 2019. So far in 2020, there have been 330 crashes and 93 hit-and-run cases in Bozeman. In 2019, the final number was 1,750 crashes and 677 hit-and-run incidents.

Many of these accidents occur when drivers, seeing a light turn yellow and assuming that the oncoming traffic will stop, make a left turn and collide with other drivers who enter the intersection at the same time. In general, those areas in Bozeman that have more traffic see more accidents.

Police say that investigating these crashes can be time-consuming with additional reports to file for the state as a whole when an accident results in a certain amount of damage. The number of crashes can be reduced, though, if drivers are more alert to their surroundings and more willing to slow down when necessary.

One of the things that the investigators of car accidents do is determine fault. This is important for those victims who wish to file a personal injury claim. Montana adheres to the rule of comparative negligence, which means that plaintiffs can recover damages only if their degree of fault does not exceed the defendant's. Since Montana is not a no-fault state, anyone can file a claim regardless of the extent of injuries. It may be a good idea to hire a lawyer since insurance companies can be aggressive in denying payment to victims.
