Report: Montana has the worst drivers

This year, Car Insurance Comparison conducted a study seeking to determine which state has the worst drivers. Basing their findings on fatal car accident data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, researchers found that Montana ranks at the top of the list for having the most dangerous drivers.

The study took into account the percentage of fatal crashes that involved the following factors:

  •        Alcohol
  •        Careless driving
  •        Failure to obey traffic signals
  •        Not wearing seatbelts
  •        Speed

Researchers also compared data regarding the rate of fatalities per 100 million miles traveled. Montana ranked in the top 20 states for every category and had the highest fatality rate of any state.

In a bit of good news, the NHTSA noted that both traffic injuries and fatalities on the road have decreased since 2013. Fatalities are down 25 percent from 2005 to 2014, and the number of injured people has fallen 13 percent over the same timeframe.

Despite those statistics, it is still obvious that Montana has some work to do to improve safety on the roads, starting with personal responsibility. Car Insurance Comparison reminds drivers that careless driving emerged as a key predictor of the states with the worst drivers. People who show a disregard for the rules of the road, whether it is drinking while driving or speeding, endanger the lives of countless others.

Fortunately, Montana does enable residents to hold negligent drivers accountable for damages. Under the law, anyone wishing to file a lawsuit has three years from the date of the accident to do so.
